About Gymnopédie no. 1
Gymnopédie no. 1 perhaps is the most popular among Gymnopédies, a collection of short and atmospheric pieces composed by Erik Satie (1866-1925). For some observers, Erik Satie was simply an eccentric composer of weird short little songs. His early musical education was unsatisfactory, and most of his works defy the expected conventions of music in his time. However, one should not dismiss him quickly for his ideas have a profound influence on music composers thus gave way on many musical developments. Satie influenced composers such as his contemporary Debussy, Ravel, and Stravinsky to name a few.
One can say that Satie’s music best suits the everyday life. It’s simple, sincere, and at times repetitive. It’s very easy to dismiss but behind this seemingly simple music, is something different and captivating. It has attitude, sadness, and most of the time uncertainty. It’s the aural accompaniment of our everyday life.
